Lake of the Ozarks Casino Tracker
Current status
Awaiting federal decision. The Osage Nation’s casino is not approved and not under construction. Its land-into-trust application sits with the U.S. Department of the Interior. A Draft Environmental Assessment was released in July 2025, and the City of Lake Ozark has signed revenue and support agreements. Local officials estimate 3–6 years to a full casino; a temporary gaming facility could open sooner once land is placed in trust. The separate state-licensed casino effort paused its 2026 petition campaign in May 2026.

Frequently asked questions
When will the Lake of the Ozarks casino open?
There is no opening date. The Osage Nation’s casino cannot begin construction until the U.S. Department of the Interior approves its land-into-trust application, which has been pending since October 2021. Local officials estimate 3–6 years until a full casino operates. A temporary gaming facility could open earlier once land is in trust.
Is the Lake of the Ozarks casino approved?
No. The federal government has not approved the land-into-trust application. A Draft Environmental Assessment was released in July 2025 and local agreements are signed, but the final Interior Department decision — the step that actually matters — is still pending.
What is Class II gaming?
Class II gaming covers bingo-based games and electronic machines built on bingo mechanics, regulated by the tribe and the National Indian Gaming Commission rather than the state. Unlike Class III (Vegas-style slots and table games), Class II does not require a state compact. The Osage Nation’s Lake Ozark project is planned as a Class II facility.
Will there be a temporary casino first?
Possibly. Once the land is placed into federal trust, the Osage Nation could open a temporary gaming facility on the site while the full $60 million casino and hotel are built. The Nation has used this approach at other locations.
What happened to the second casino proposal?
A private investor group, Lake of the Ozarks Community Gaming (formerly Osage River Gaming), sought a state-licensed casino. Missouri voters rejected its ballot measure in November 2024 (52.5% no), and in May 2026 the group paused its 2026 petition campaign after a signature shortfall. It is not currently active.
